Facial Masculinization Surgery

Facial Masculinization Surgery (FMS) is a suite of surgical procedures designed to alter facial features to create a more traditionally masculine appearance. The process typically begins with a comprehensive consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in gender-affirming surgeries. During this consultation, the patient discusses their goals, and the surgeon evaluates their facial structure to develop a personalized surgical plan. The procedures involved in FMS can vary, but they often include forehead contouring, cheek augmentation, jaw reshaping, and chin enhancement. Forehead contouring involves reducing the prominence of the brow bone by reshaping it, which might include a brow lift for a more angular look. Cheek augmentation can be performed using implants or fat grafting to emphasize a more robust and defined cheek structure.

Jaw reshaping and chin enhancement are critical components of FMS, as these procedures can significantly alter the perceived masculinity of the face. Jaw reshaping usually involves osteotomy, where the bones are strategically cut and sometimes augmented with implants to create a stronger, more defined jawline. Chin enhancement might involve genioplasty, which repositions the chin through either augmentation with implants or reduction, depending on the desired outcome. Some patients may also undergo a nasal reshaping procedure, also known as rhinoplasty, to further harmonize facial features with masculine aesthetics. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and may take several hours, depending on the complexity and number of procedures being performed. Recovery time varies, but patients are generally advised to take several weeks off work or daily activities to allow for proper healing and to reduce swelling and bruising. Post-operative care includes follow-up appointments to monitor healing, and comprehensive care instructions to ensure the best outcome of the surgery.
