Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape or reposition the ears. This cosmetic operation is usually performed to correct the look of protruding or misshaped ears, ultimately enhancing the overall facial aesthetic and boosting self-confidence. The procedure can change the size, shape, or position of the ears or even reconstruct them if they’ve been damaged by an injury or birth defect. Otoplasty can be performed on both adults and children as young as 5 or 6 years old, when the ears have reached their full size.

The procedure is carried out under local or general anesthesia depending on the complexity of the surgery and the patient’s comfort level. An incision is typically made behind the ear where the ear meets the head. The cartilage is then sculpted and shaped and, in some cases, excess skin may be removed. In cases where the ears stick out from the head, they can be repositioned to give a more natural look. Once the necessary adjustments are made, the surgeon will use non-removable sutures to maintain the newly-shaped cartilage. The incisions are then closed with stitches. Overall, otoplasty is a safe and effective procedure that provides lasting results.
